Eulogy on the Dog

George Graham Vest (1830–1904) è stato un politico e avvocato statunitense. Esponente del Partito Democratico, fu membro del Congresso degli Stati Confederati, durante la guerra di secessione americana, e, più tardi, senatore degli Stati Uniti d'America. Da avvocato, si distinse per le sue efficaci arringhe, tra le quali la celebre Eulogy on the dog, divenuta una pietra miliare nel cammino verso il riconoscimento dei diritti degli animali.

Gentlemen of the Jury : The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer. He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

Signori della giuria, il migliore amico che un uomo abbia a questo mondo può rivoltarsi contro di lui e diventargli nemico. Il figlio e la figlia che ha allevato con cura amorevole possono rivelarsi ingrati. Coloro che ci sono più vicini e più cari, ai quali affidiamo la nostra felicità e il nostro buon nome, possono tradire la loro fede. Il denaro si può perdere, e ci sfugge di mano proprio quando ne abbiamo più bisogno. La reputazione di un uomo può essere sacrificata in un momento di sconsideratezza. Le persone che sono inclini a gettarsi in ginocchio per ossequiarci quando il successo ci arride possono essere le prime a lanciare il sasso della malizia, quando il fallimento aleggia sulla nostra testa come una nube temporalesca. Il solo amico del tutto privo di egoismo che un uomo possa avere in questo mondo egoista, l'unico che non lo abbandona mai, l'unico che non si rivela mai ingrato o sleale è il suo cane.

Signori della giuria, il cane resta accanto al padrone nella prosperità e nella povertà, nella salute e nella malattia. Pur di stare al suo fianco, dorme sul terreno gelido, quando soffiano i venti invernali e cade la neve. Bacia la mano che non ha cibo da offrirgli, lecca le ferite e le piaghe causate dallo scontro con la rudezza del mondo. Veglia sul sonno di un povero come se fosse un principe. Quando tutti gli altri amici si allontanano, lui resta. Quando le ricchezze prendono il volo e la reputazione s'infrange, è altrettanto costante nel suo amore come il sole nel suo percorso nel cielo.

Se la sorte spinge il padrone a vagare nel mondo come un reietto, senza amici e senza una casa, il cane fedele non chiede altro privilegio che poterlo accompagnare per proteggerlo dal pericolo e lottare contro i suoi nemici, e quando arriva la scena finale e la morte stringe nel suo abbraccio il padrone e il suo corpo viene deposto nella terra fredda, non importa se tutti gli altri amici lo accompagneranno; lì, presso la tomba, ci sarà il nobile cane, con la testa fra le zampe e gli occhi mesti, ma aperti in segno di vigilanza, fedele e sincero anche nella morte. 

L'Eulogy on the dog divenne una delle più famose orazioni della storia della giurisprudenza statunitense. In vari luoghi degli Stati Uniti nei decenni a seguire le furono dedicati monumenti e lapidi commemorative e ancora oggi resta un manifesto delle principali associazioni animaliste statunitensi ed anche di altri Paesi.
